London Collections Men A/W 14 finished its 4th season last week with great collections that surely put UK closer to the forefront of Mens Fashion week. The UK designers this year proved that great designs and immaculate tailoring is part of the British heritage. The Saville Row tailoring styles were seen in the collections but with a contemporary look. They were versatile in muted colors, with attention paid in the details, like pops of colours seen in bow ties or lapels, and contrasting fabrics like velvet and lurex all added a modern luxe to the “British” classics. Here’s a snippet of some of the shows.
Bohemian, urban youthful look of the “artist” or “painter” There were colorful printed silk scarves tied in wide circles at the neck, white netted vests under open buttoned jackets and shirts, the 3/4 sleeves and thin trousers all gave this dainty boyish charm.
Smart with interesting details that added a decadent touch of flair… Like the 3 piece suit in velvet aubergine, a pop of yellow velvet collar in a 3 piece grey suit, and silk shawl lapels with a sheen made it rich, cool and decadent luxe.
Gieves & Hawkes
Jason Basmajian, previously Artistic Director at Brioni showcased his 2nd collection for the brand, and the influences of the Italian style are beginning to show. There is a more delicate approach to the fabrics like the alpaca, and cashmere coats. The signature Gieves & Hawkes “military look” was still seen but appeared more versatile and softer. Contrasting textures like shearling collars on leather jackets and the shiny blue lurex tux teamed with a velvet bow tie added a luxe and contemporary feel.
Blue, a whole lot of blue. The collection showcased Nicoll’s signature color, that blue/teal which was seen on coats, to shorts, to leather. Bright colors and prints were mixed up with different textures and patterns like a tweed jacket with leather sleeves and a furry collar, and organza silk shirts with ruffle details in different colours. Colourful and mixed up. The eccentric gentleman.
